Purpose The SLA Foundation's mission includes (1) helping to find a cure for Melanoma and (2) providing education and support for those suffering from this terrible cancer. The Scarlet Lawrence Akins Foundation was established with the goal of raising public awareness of this potentially deadly cancer and contributing funds to help researchers find a cure for those diagnosed with this disease. The SLA Foundation also provides speakers to spread the message about practicing safe sunning.
Each year in August the SLA Foundation conducts a 5K run. SLA provides free skin exams at the race site, as well as provides sun screen products and Melanoma information. Volunteers to help with the race and donations of food, drink and entertainment for the event are welcome.
